 Bening’s Best Friend

Sometimes, friendship begins at the most unexpected moment. For Bening, it started on the first day of orientation at President Primary School, eight years ago.

The school was crowded with new students, all trying to find their place. Everyone looked nervous, also Bening. She didn’t know anyone there and wasn’t sure what to do or who to talk with.

That day, the teachers asked the students to form groups for a fun game. Quickly, most kids ran to their friends or picked new ones. But Bening still stood. There, another girl, just as quiet and awkward. Her name was Putri.

The teacher noticed they were the only ones left without a group. She smiled and told them to pair up. Awkward at first, Bening and Putri walked toward each other and said a shy “hi.” It was simple. No long conversation. Just two quiet kids who didn’t want to be alone.

But something about that small moment felt different. They laughed a little during the game, helped each other, and even cheered when their turn came.

After the game, they sat together during lunch. They didn’t talk much, but it felt less lonely. That day, they walked out of school not just as classmates, but as the beginning of best friends.

Over time, that first meeting turned into a real friendship. They started walking to class together, studying for tests, and supporting each other through school life. They weren’t just partners in a game anymore. They became partners in everything.

What’s amazing is that, through all these years, they never had a serious fight. Sure, there were small disagreements, but nothing that ever broke their friendship. They always chose to stay, to talk, and to understand.

Now, even as they’ve grown older, their friendship remains strong. All of it started from that small, quiet moment when they were the last two without a group, and chose each other.

So if you ever feel alone in a new place, remember this: sometimes the people who are standing quietly in the corner with you could be the ones who stay beside you for a lifetime.
